First meeting of the reconstituted Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways held.

Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said the Official Language Hindi is a powerful medium to effectively communicate the Government’s policies and public welfare programmes to the common people.
New Delhi | July 29, 2026: The first meeting of the reconstituted Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways was held today in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. Lok Sabha MP Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab, Rajya Sabha MP Shri Madan Rathore, other honourable members of the Hindi Advisory Committee, Official Language experts, senior officers of the Ministry and its subordinate organizations were present in the meeting.
The objective of the meeting was to review the current status of the use of the Official Language Hindi in the Ministry and its subordinate organizations and to discuss measures for making its progressive use more effective.
At the beginning of the meeting, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Vijay Kumar, welcomed all the members and highlighted the Ministry’s commitment towards the progressive use of the Official Language Hindi. He also informed the members about the various initiatives being undertaken in this direction.
During the meeting, the honourable members gave several important and valuable suggestions to promote the effective use of the Official Language Hindi in administrative work, official correspondence, mass communication and various programmes of the Ministry.
Addressing the meeting, Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “The Hindi Advisory Committee is not just a formal committee, but an important platform to ensure linguistic simplicity in administrative work under the Official Language Policy and to make governance more effective and accessible to the general public. The suggestions of this committee play an important role in making the policies and functioning of the Ministry more effective, people-oriented and easy.”
He further said, “Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is rapidly moving towards the goal of ‘Developed India–2047’. Development of infrastructure, logistics, maritime economy and waterways is crucial in achieving this vision. Under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, our Ministry is continuously working towards modernization of ports, development of maritime infrastructure, green and sustainable shipping and expansion of waterways. Through ‘Maritime India Vision 2030’ and ‘Maritime Amritkal Vision 2047’, the goal has been set to make India’s maritime sector a global leader. I am extremely happy to share that India has achieved the first position in the world in the field of ship recycling.”
Emphasizing the importance of the Official Language Hindi, Shri Sonowal said, “The true purpose of all these achievements and schemes will be fulfilled only when information about them reaches every citizen, entrepreneur, sailor, farmer, industrialist, student and stakeholder in a language they understand. This is where the role of the Official Language Hindi becomes extremely important. I am confident that the suggestions received in today’s meeting will not only prove useful for the Ministry but will also contribute significantly to the effective implementation of the Official Language Policy. The Ministry will seriously consider all your suggestions.”
On this occasion, 12 organizations under the Ministry were honoured with the Official Language Shield for their progressive use and outstanding work in promoting the Official Language Hindi.
The Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways also appreciated the suggestions made by the members of the Committee and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to further promoting the use of the Official Language Hindi.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his gratitude to all the members for their valuable suggestions and active participation. He expressed confidence that the recommendations of the Committee would further strengthen the effective implementation of the Official Language Policy in the Ministry and provide a new direction to its people-oriented functioning.
